During walking and running the foot and ankle move through a combination of pronation and supination. These are normal motions that enable the foot to absorb shock and propel the body forward. However, when too much or too little motion occurs, greater stress is placed on the leg and the rest of the body.

Foot and ankle biomechanics can be broken down into three main categories: Neutral Pronation, Supination, and Overpronation. The direction and amount of motion of your leg, ankle, and foot determine which category you're in. Neutral pronators and supinators should wear neutral shoes; overpronators should wear motion-control shoes or stability shoes.

NEUTRAL PRONATION:
Mild pronation (inward rolling) of the foot and ankle. The calcaneus (heel bone) will be perpendicular or slightly tilted to the inside.
SUPINATION:
Outward rolling of the foot and ankle.
OVERPRONATION:
Moderate to severe pronation of the foot and ankle. The calcaneus will be tilted to the inside.
