On December 31st, Van Phan won the women's division of the Last Chance Marathon in Bellingham, with a time of 3:39:04. This concluded a remarkable year in which she ran 53 marathons (many of which were actually ultramarathons), including 16 in which she was the women's overall winner! You can view all the details at Van's Marathon Maniacs page.

At the December 16th 12 K's of Christmas, Erika Daligcon placed 2nd with a time of 47:26. The following day included racing action of a different sort, as SRC employees headed to Champs in Redmond for an indoor go-karting showdown. Liz "Dizzy Lizzy" Stahl's one-lap time of 19.18 was best in the qualifying heats, but in the finals it was speed junkie Scott "Mac Daddy" McCoubrey who maneuvered his way to an easy victory. He was followed by Bjorn "Youngster" Begelman, Leslie McCoubrey, Stahl, and Brian Morrison. Awards were also given to Phil "Hobo Deuce" Kochik for Best Helmet Hair and Michael "Alabama Hamma" Sanders for Best Racer Name.

Racing results for the week ending December 10th truly showcase the diverse talents of SRC folks, from youth to masters. Urban sherpa Henry Wigglesworth got things started on the 8th with a 2nd-place showing at the Washington Mutual Stairclimb, losing only to a firefighter who is ten years younger. Then on the 9th, SRC representatives competed at the national club cross country championships, Junior Olympics, Foot Locker nationals, and Sunmart Texas Trail Endurance Run. At club nationals, Alysun Deckert was the national champion in the 40-44 age category with a time of 22:25 for the muddy 6K course, and Mary Hanna (23:11) was 2nd in the 45-49 age group! They led the SRC to 3rd place in the 40-49 team competition, with support from Ann Armstrong (24:14, 15th in 40-44) and Wanda Howlett (26:38, 29th in 40-44). The masters men included Dan Salazar (36:13, 51st in 40-44), David White-Espin (36:45, 30th in 45-49), Henry Wigglesworth (38:21, 47th in 45-49), and Win Van Pelt (41:29, 77th in 45-49). The open women placed 14th out of 28 complete teams thanks to Gwen Greiner (21:53, 46th of 248 finishers), Angie Morey (22:23, 80th), Meg Busse (22:31, 92nd), Becca Ward (22:58, 119th), Jen Arthur (23:00, 121st), Emily Showman (23:33, 154th), and Erika Daligcon (24:08, 186th). The SRC did not field a full open men's team, with only Ben Haber (33:34, 139th of 328 finishers), Chris Charles (34:29, 200th), Ben Sauvage (35:50, 253rd), and a very tired Dan Salazar (39:08, 308th) completing the race. Junior Olympics results were: Kyra Burke, 22nd in the midget (11-12) girls 3K, 11:23; Michael Mendenhall, 34th in the midget boys 3K, 11:01; Simon Barbe, 54th in the midget boys 3K, 11:10; Breanna Huschka, 69th in the intermediate (15-16) girls 5K, 20:36; Dylan Hopper, 64th in the intermediate boys 5K, 17:28; Jennifer Bluhm, 13th in the young women (17-18) 5K, 20:19; Iain Redding, 18th in the young men 5K, 16:33; and Joshua Simons, 78th in the young men 5K, 17:41. At the Foot Locker cross country meet, Max O'Donoghue-McDonald placed 15th in the elite field with a 5K time of 15:46. Finally, at Sunmart, Greg Crowther extended the SRC's streak of victories (started in 2004 by Uli Steidl in the 50K and continued in 2005 by Steidl in the 50K and Phil Kochik in the 50-miler). Crowther won the 50-miler in 5:37:39, the fastest time ever for an American on this course, trouncing 100-mile world record holder Oleg Kharitonov and 2:13 marathoner Giorgio Calcaterra.

On December 2nd, Max O'Donoghue placed 6th at the Foot Locker West Regional high school cross-country meet. His 5K time of 15:51 put him only six seconds behind the winner. He thus qualifies for the national Foot Locker championships on December 9th.

Running through rain, wind, and sleet on Thanksgiving morning, 11-year-old Kyra Burke placed 1st in her age group and 6th overall at the Centre at Norpoint Turkey Trot in Tacoma. Her time for 5K was 21:19. Then on the 26th, Uli and Trish Steidl achieved a rare husband-and-wife sweep at the Seattle Marathon. This was Uli's 8th consecutive victory at this race, and Trish's first one after two previous runner-up finishes. Their respective times were 2:27:54 and 3:01:36. Ann Armstrong (3:05:39) was 3rd overall and 1st master. In the half-marathon, Mary Hanna ran a 1:27:56 for 5th overall and 2nd (behind the legendary Joan Samuelson) among masters.

November 18-19 was another big weekend for cross-country races. SRC runners at the Region 13 Junior Olympics meet were, by division, Midget Girls 3K: Kyra Burke (11th, 11:57); Intermediate Girls 5K: Breanna Huschka (8th, 20:25); Young Women 5K: Jennifer Bluhm (6th, 20:28); Midget Boys 3K: Michael Mendenhall (6th, 11:10), Simon Barbe (7th, 11:12), and Erik Robbin (45th, 12:38); Youth Boys 4K: Charlie Hodgman (24th, 14:53); Intermediate Boys 5K: Dylan Hopper (18th, 17:05) and Erik Dasilva (59th, 19:35); and Young Men 5K: Joshua Simons (11th, 16:51), Iain Redding (12th, 16:56), Jesse Roberson (20th, 17:14), and Matt Santos (37th, 18:20). Top-20 finishers in each race advance to the national Junior Olympics meet on December 9th in Spokane. At the Northwest Regional cross-country 8K races for open and masters runners, SRC finishers included Meg Busse (1st, 31:09), Becca Ward (4th, 31:58), Ann Armstrong (2nd in 40-44 division, 33:38), Mary Hanna (4th in 45-49 division, 33:14), Claire Kindley (5th in 45-49, 36:26), Ben Sauvage (8th, 26:52), Chris Charles (11th, 27:31), Dan Salazar (3rd in 40-44, 28:40), David White-Espin (3rd in 45-49, 29:03), Henry Wigglesworth (5th in 45-49, 30:00), and Win Van Pelt (7th in 45-49, 32:48). And at the Nike Border Clash, which pits the best Washington and Oregon high schoolers against each other, Max O'Donoghue-McDonald was the individual champion, clocking 14:01 over the 4.4K course and leading the Washington boys to a team victory as well. On the roads, Justin Angle ran 2:54:55 at the Philadelphia Marathon.

On November 10th, Kyle Skaggs completed a double crossing of the Grand Canyon (S. Kaibab to N. Kaibab to S. Kaibab), taking 7:37:59 to cover 42 miles and over 11,000 feet of climbing. That is apparently a new speed record, eclipsing the previous mark of 7:40 set by US 100-miler record holder Rae Clark. On the 11th, Van Phan won the Ron Herzog 50K with a time of 5:05:26. Also that day, 15 SRC kids advanced from the Junior Olympics Association meet to next weekend's Regional meet by virtue of placing in the top 35. SRC finishers by race were.... Bantam Girls (10 and under, 3K): Audrey Western 1st, 12:57. Midget Girls (11-12, 3K): Kyra Burke 7th, 12:09; Nina Penner 13th, 12:58. Intermediate Girls (15-16, 5K): Breanna Huschka 11th, 20:51. The SRC-sponsored team MerGeo.com competed in the GoLite USARA Adventure Race National Championship in Santa Barbara, California on November 2nd and 3rd. Eric Bone, Roger Michel, and Julie Heidt earned a spot in this field by winning the Northwest Regional Championships earlier in the fall. At nationals, after initial problems during the kayaking leg, MerGeo recovered quickly and with particularly good trekking times pulled into the top 10 and stayed there for the remainder of the race, which they finished in 27 hours and 29 minutes, good enough for 8th place overall.

At the Washington state high school cross-country meet on November 4th, SRC employee Max O'Donoghue-McDonald won his second straight title in the boys 3A division. His time of 15:32 was the fastest of the day. Meanwhile, south of Portland, Van Phan found success in her 46th marathon of 2006, winning the women's division of the Autumn Leaves 50-Miler and placing 3rd among all runners with a time of 7:19:34. And in Virginia, Phil Kochik's 7:37:38 placed 3rd at the Mountain Masochist 50-miler. On the 5th, a large group of SRC folks attended the annual PNTF cross country championships. Perhaps the most impressive individual performance was that of Alysun Deckert, who showed the masters field no mercy in achieving a 46-second margin of victory. Her time of 22:42 over the hilly 6K course was a masters course record. She was joined by fellow female masters Mary Hanna (24:26, 1st in the 45-49 division), Ann Armstrong (25:27, 4th in the 40-44 division), and Claire Kindley (26:42, 4th in 45-49). Male masters included 40-to-44-year-olds Dan Salazar (6th, 21:23) and Eric Fadiman (17th, 23:58) and 45-to-49ers David White-Espin (3rd, 21:25), Henry Wigglesworth (5th, 21:56), and Win Van Pelt (11th, 24:03). Participants in the open women's 6K race included Gwen Greiner (2nd, 22:12), Meg Busse (5th, 22:47), Jen Arthur (6th, 22:48), Angie Morey (7th, 22:49), Emily Showman (13th, 23:45), and Tatiana Salazar (16th, 25:28). Open men's 10K runners were Greg Crowther (5th, 32:34), Drew Wartenburg (10th, 33:23), Ben Sauvage (13th, 33:41), Chris Charles (15th, 34:01), Ben Haber (17th, 34:23), Mark Davies (26th, 35:59), Michael Gordon (27th, 36:08), Bjorn Begelman (29th, 36:37), and Dan Salazar (34th, 37:49). The SRC also dominated the 3K family race, with representation from Simon Barbe (11:32), Michael Mendenhall (11:37), Kyra Burke (12:05), Nina Penner (13:06), Gordon Burke (13:07), Audrey Western (13:27), Jahaan Ansari (14:28), and Geoffrey Martin-Noble (15:27).

On October 28th, the SRC cross country teams celebrated team manager Liz Stahl's birthday by competing at the 8th annual Bellevue Community College Invitational at Lake Sammamish Park in Issaquah. The women's team was 2nd in the non-community college division and 3rd out of six teams overall; its members were Meg Busse (2nd, 18:31 for 5K), Sarah Gist (3rd, 18:43), Becca Ward (15th, 19:32), Wanda Howlett (29th, 20:18), and Heidi Jiminez (60th, 23:08). The men's team won the non-community college division and placed 2nd overall out of nine teams; Ben Sauvage (8th, 25:44 for 8K) led the charge for the men in black, followed by Ben Haber (14th, 26:22), Michael Gordon (33rd, 27:16), Dan Salazar (36th, 27:33), Bjorn Begelman (40th, 27:43), Henry Wigglesworth (64th, 29:15), Eric Fadiman (82nd, 31:07), and Peteris Ledins (92nd, 31:48).

SRC's small-but-hardy youth squad performed well at the October 21st Issaquah Gliders cross-country meet. In the 3K midget boys race, Simon Barbe (10:56) was 5th and Michael Mendenhall (11:17) was 8th; in the 3K midget girls race, Kyra Burke (11:35) was 6th. All three times were personal bests. SRC employee Bobby Palmquist ran 2:35:30 at the October 22nd Chicago Marathon, a personal best time for the distance that earned him 188th place. And at the Dawg Dash, Greg Crowther broke free of the lead cyclist, cut the course short, and eventually settled for 2nd place with a not-quite-5K time of 15:05. Bjorn Begelman was 12th in 16:50; Kyra Burke (20:30) was 2nd in her age group (17 and under), 10th overall, and 5:20 faster than last year! In the 10K event, Simon Barbe set a personal record of 39:50 and was 1st in his age group (17 and under).

On October 14th, Trish Steidl took 9th place at the Greater Hartford Marathon. Her time was 2:57:08. On the 19th, Max O'Donoghue-McDonald won the Metro League cross-country championship race with a 5K time of 15:22, breaking a 16-year-old record for the hilly Lower Woodland Park course.

Among the men, Michael Gordon led the way with his 39th-place 34:43 on the 10K course; he was followed by Mark Davies (62nd, 35:54), Ben Haber (67th, 36:21), and Dan Salazar (73rd, 36:35). On the youth cross-country circuit, Simon Barbe (3rd, 11:00), Michael Mendenhall (6th, 11:34), Nina Penner (6th, 12:11), and Kyra Burke (7th, 12:13) all fared well in the 3K "midget" races (for ages 11-12) at the Cascade Striders Fleet Feet Invitational. At the Baker Lake 50K, Jim Kerby coasted to a 4:15:19 overall victory, a masters course record, while Van Phan gutted out a come-from-behind win (5:10:47) in the women's race. A few other SRC runners showed their fins at the Issaquah Rotary Run at Salmon Days on October 8th. Gwen Greiner (35:58) and Alysun Deckert (36:55) went 1-2 in the women's race; Uli Steidl (1st, 30:19), Ben Sauvage (6th, 33:13), and David White-Espin (10th / 3rd master, 35:02) were among the swiftest-migrating men. Finally, at the IAU 100K World Cup race in Korea, USA team member Phil Kochik placed 39th with a time of 8:00:24.

On September 29-30, Scott Jurek won the 246-kilometer Spartathlon from Athens to Sparta in a time of 22:52:18, the fastest time ever recorded on this course by anyone other than the legendary Yiannis Kouros. At the September 30th Willamette Invitational, Drew Wartenburg placed 67th of 228 finishers in the "Gold" race with a time of 25:52. On October 1st, two SRC runners narrowly missed their time goals at the Twin Cities Marathon. Mary Hanna, hoping for a sub-3:00, placed 2nd in the 45-49 age group with a time of 3:00:51; Greg Crowther, hoping for a sub-2:22, wound up 13th overall in a time of 2:24:00. Van Phan had the longest weekend of all; she was 2nd in the Tahoe Triple, a stage race of three marathons on consecutive days (September 28-30) around Lake Tahoe. She then cooled down with a 2nd-place 4:19 at the Auburn Trail Marathon on October 1st.

On September 23rd, Kyle Skaggs, Scott McCoubrey, Dave Terry and Brock Gavery all successfully circumnavigated Mt. Rainier via the 96-mile Wonderland Trail, non-stop. Scott, Dave, and Brock ran together, finishing the route in 27 hours and 28 minutes; Kyle set a new "supported" record of 20:53! Meanwhile, north of Enumclaw, Mark Davies placed 2nd overall in the Black Diamond Half-Ironman Triathlon; his time of 4:48:46 included the 15th-fastest swim (29:14), 4th-fastest bike (2:42:05), and 6th-fastest run (1:33:49). Then on September 24th, Ben Haber placed 6th at the small-but-competitive Cedar River 30K with a time of 1:47:13.

The final Cougar Mountain trail race of the summer, a 13-miler, was held on August 12th. Ben Sauvage, making his first Cougar appearance of the year, came away with the victory on the men's side, moving into the lead with less than a mile to go and claiming a 12-second win with a time of 1:46:41. The club's top female finisher was Mary Hanna, 2nd overall and 1st among masters with her 2:05:50. Among those who completed all four races in the 2006 series, club member Ruaraidh Stenson had the best overall record and was declared the men's series champion.

Phil Kochik has been named to the United States team that will compete in the 100K World Cup race in Korea on October 8th. Greg Crowther was also named to the team but will be unable to make the trip this year.

Bobby Palmquist and Emily Showman were the overall winners at the July 16th MMRF Race for Research (Seattle edition) with times of 16:53 and 18:49, respectively.

On July 8th, Matt Messner (1:17:28) and Eric Bone (1:18:19) swept the top two spots at the Cougar Mountain 10-Miler. The June 24-25 Western States 100 Miler is actually 100.2 miles, a fact that proved incredibly unfortunate for the SRC's Brian Morrison. Brian ran heroically in his Western States debut, moving from 4th place into the lead between miles 60 and 78, and remained in control until collapsing several times in the last 300 meters of the race. His crew helped him reach the finish first in 18:05:13, but he was disqualified because of their assistance. We salute Brian's tremendous effort and wish him a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, Jim Kerby followed up his outstanding 5th-place finish last year with another excellent run (6th place overall, 5th male, 2nd master; 20:03:45). Other SRC finishers at Western States included Justin Angle (22:44:53), Brock Gavery (23:36:48), Jeff Phillips (27:06:56), John Powell (27:16:21), Chris Fagan (27:39; 17th woman), and Chase Mueller (28:42:23). Van Phan also ran 100 miles, but not at Western States, placing 3rd among females (4th overall) at the Eagle 100 in Keremeos, British Columbia in a time of 27:17:36. Some additional club members opted for the less arduous Mountains to Sound 100-Mile Relay on the 25th. Glen Weissman led off with the mountain biking leg, suffering a flat tire but changing it in an impressive 4 minutes; Mark Davies handled the road cycling chores for SRC and posted the 2nd-fastest time of the day on that leg; Eric Bone finished in the top 15% of the kayaking field despite not being a paddling specialist; Uli Steidl did the half-marathon run leg over 12 minutes faster than everyone else; and Greg Crowther made up 5 minutes in 6 miles of running to edge Callen Construction for 2nd place overall in the team standings. The team's cumulative time was 6:59:53. Finally, at the Fairfield Half Marathon on the 25th, Trish Steidl placed 4th with a time of 1:25:08.

On June 21st, Greg Crowther won the 3000-meter run at the Club Northwest All Comers track meet with a time of 8:49.2 and was named outstanding male performer of the meet.

Way to go, Gwen! On June 17th, Gwen Greiner ran 2:45:11 at Grandma's Marathon, thus becoming the first Washington state runner (male or female) to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials. Gwen finished 11th at Grandma's, with teammate Alysun Deckert running 2:53:11 to place 17th. In other racing action, Henry Wigglesworth used a late charge to win his age group (45-49) at the Mount Washington Road Race, which served as the USATF's national mountain running championship, with a time of 1:16:02 on the severely uphill 7.6-mile course. At the Fall City Days 10K, Mary Hanna was the 1st master (2nd overall) in 37:58 and David White-Espin was the 2nd master (4th overall) in 35:37.... Preliminary results from Race for the Cure: Emily Showman 2nd in ~18:46, Trish Steidl 3rd in ~18:47. Finally, at the Mohican 100-Miler, Marty Fagan placed 3rd with a time of 22:18.

On June 8th, team member Alysun Deckert received a Distinguished Staff Award at the University of Washington's annual "Best and Brightest" recognition ceremony. Deckert is being honored for founding and organizing Team Transplant, a group of organ donation recipients and others who train for half marathons and marathons. Click here to read the press release about Alysun. The next day, Deckert placed 4th at the Fremont 5K in 17:45, behind teammate Gwen Greiner (2nd, 17:10). On the men's side, Greg Crowther was 2nd in 15:03 and Bobby Palmquist was 15th in 16:36, while David White-Espin (16:59) took 3rd among masters runners; in the "Briefcase Relay," which involved running with a loaded briefcase while wearing business attire, the SRC squad (consisting of Alison Hanks, Phil Kochik, Scott McCoubrey, and Bobby Palmquist) took 4th out of 35 teams in 17:37. The day after that, Mary Hanna won the Cougar Mountain 7.5 Miler in 58:14; Matt Messner (48:57) and Bjorn Begelman (53:30) were 2nd and 3rd for the men. And at the Sound to Narrows 12K, Drew Wartenburg took 3rd in a competitive field with a time of 39:35.

Two of the SRC's most prolific marathoners were in action yet again at the June 3rd Newport Marathon. Mary Hanna set a masters course record and placed 3rd among all women in 2:55:25. Van Phan was 9th (1st in the 35-39 age group) with a time of 3:17:09, a personal best by 8 minutes. Van has already done five marathons and 17 ultramarathons this year!

Several SRC club members are excellent downhill skiers, but Uli Steidl is not one of them. Nevertheless, Uli did the hike-and-then-ski leg of the May 28th Ski to Sea Relay as part of the Bagelry team. Uli's rapid hiking gave him the 11th-fastest time on his leg and helped the Bagelry team place 13th overall and 1st in the mixed open division. One day earlier, Van Phan won the Blackfoot Ultra 100K in Edmonton in 10:37:38, a new course record by 31 minutes.

At least two club members now have running-themed weblogs (blogs) that are worth a visit. Tales from the Trail gives you Scott Jurek's perspective on ultramarathoning, while My Track Record offers Greg Crowther's notes on running-related pursuits.

The 4th annual Cougar Mountain Trail Trail Running Series kicked off on May 20th with a record number of participants in the 5-mile race. Top finishers included Ben Haber (1st, 34:30), Matt Messner (2nd, 35:05), Bjorn Begelman (5th, 36:07), and Dustin Gilbert (6th, 36:19). Also on the 20th, Van Phan completed 70.98 miles at the Redmond Watershed Preserve 12-Hour Trail Race, a distance that placed her 1st among women (3rd overall) and broke her women's course record from last year as well as the previous men's course record. On the 21st, Uli Steidl won the 12-kilometer Rhody Run for the third time with a time of 37:53, while Trish Steidl was 4th in 47:11. Also on the 21st, Gwen Greiner (1:18:57), Alysun Deckert (1:21:36), and Mary Hanna (1:24:50) swept the top three spots at the Capitol City Half Marathon. Finally, at the Nordstrom Beat the Bridge 8K, Greg Crowther (24:49), Chris Charles (25:10), and Drew Wartenburg (25:15) went 3-4-5, while Emily Showman (30:12) was the 5th female finisher and Henry Wigglesworth (27:53) was the 2nd-place master (1st in the 45-49 age group).

On May 13th, Dustin Gilbert placed 2nd at the McDonald Forest 50K with a time of 4:34:08. Also placing highly were Alison Hanks (4th, 5:29:36), William Emerson (6th, 2nd among masters, 4:47:35), and Scott McCoubrey (8th, 4th among masters, 4:57:26). On May 14th, Glen Weissman won the Kirkland Half Marathon in 1:13:25.

The weekend of May 6-7 was another busy one for club members. Phil Kochik scored his fourth ultramarathon victory of the year at the Miwok 100K in California. His time of 8:32:50 is the third-fastest ever on the Miwok course. Kochik led an SRC contingent that also included Scott Jurek (2nd, 8:42:42), Brian Morrison (7th, 8:55:06), and Justin Angle (9th, 9:05:20). At the 21.5-mile Sunflower Iron Event, Alyson Littman ran 2:57:02 to place 3rd in a stronger-than-usual field. At the Lilac Bloomsday 12K, Washington state's largest road race, Uli Steidl (26th overall, 37:55) was the top finisher among state residents, while Gwen Greiner (24th overall, 44:24) and Chris Charles (38:35) were 2nd and 4th, respectively, in that category. At the Vancouver Marathon, Greg Crowther placed 3rd in 2:23:25 behind an Ethiopian and a Kenyan; as he told the Vancouver Sun, "Any time you outweigh the leader by like 60 pounds, it's a little hard to stick with him." Trish Steidl continued her preparation for the upcoming Green Lake 100K by placing 6th in 2:58:07. And at the Avenue of the Giants Marathon, Mary Hanna was the first woman (4th person) to finish, and her 2:59:19 broke the women's 40-44 course record, which dated back to 1981!

The last week of April was a raptor-themed week for the Brooks/SRC team. On April 27th, Trish Steidl was named head cross country and track coach of the Seattle University Redhawks. And on the 29th, Greg Crowther triumphed at the Hawk Walk/Run 5K in Redmond, with a time of 15:20.

April 22nd was the date of this year's Leona Divide 50-Miler at Lake Hughes, California. Former winner and course record-holder Scott Jurek wound up 3rd this year with a time of 6:48:15, less than 3 minutes slower than his best time on this course. Masters runner William Emerson (6:45:03) actually dipped under the course record and finished 2nd overall. Jurek protege Brian Morrison was 4th in 6:53:07, and fellow SRC employee Hal Koerner took 7th in 7:06:04. And speaking of 50-milers, the April 23rd Mount Si Ultra featured fast finishes by some of the usual suspects. Jim Kerby won the men's race in 6:18:05, while Van Phan was 2nd in the women's race in a time of 7:47:52.

Van Phan plowed through snowy conditions to win the women's division of the Capitol Peak 50-Miler on April 15th. Her time was 9:49:09. Jim Kerby (8:22:35) took 4th in the men's race. Then at the Boston Marathon on the 17th, Ben Sauvage (2:42:11) placed 159th and Bobby Palmquist was right behind him (2:42:40, 169th).

The Diez Vista 50K was held on April 8th. "Diez Vista" is a Spanish phrase apparently meaning "dominated by SRC runners"; Phil Kochik was 1st in a course-record time of 4:22:52, and he was followed by William Emerson (3rd, 4:28:29), Justin Angle (4th, 4:38:25), and Brian Morrison (7th, 4:44:47). The next day, Emerson added a 5th-place finish (1st among masters) at the Yeti Ascent, a trail running and shoeshoeing race.

Mary Hanna wasn't fooling around on April 1st; she won the Yakima River Canyon Marathon in a personal best time of 2:58:06, which was also a women's course record. Congrats, Mary! Meanwhile, in the "ho-hum" department, Uli Steidl won yet another ultramarathon, this time conquering the American River 50. Uli overcame stomach distress and a muddier-than-usual course in posting a time of 5:58:21, the fastest on this course since 1999. Finally, on April 2nd, Drew Wartenburg ran 1:12:21 to place 2nd at the Whidbey Island Half Marathon.

The Fort Steilacoom Running Club's annual Resolution Series concluded with the FSRC 20K and 20-mile races on March 25th. Trish Steidl clobbered everyone in the 20-mile event (2:15:47), and husband Uli Steidl (2nd, 1:56:32) used the race as a warmup for next weekend's American River 50-Miler. Fast 20K times were recorded by Mary Hanna (1st overall and 1st master, 1:21:48), who was tuning up for next weekend's Yakima River Canyon Marathon, and Dan Salazar (2nd overall and 1st master, 1:13:09). Meanwhile, fellow masters runner William Emerson borrowed a page from Hanna's playbook in recording an overall victory (3:53:48) at the ORRC March Mudness 50K. Then on March 26th, Greg Crowther clocked a personal best time of 1:09:02 in winning the Mercer Island Half Marathon. Bobby Palmquist placed 8th in 1:14:22, improving his best time for this distance by almost 3 minutes.

SRC representatives made their usual strong showing at the Chuckanut 50K trail run in Bellingham on March 18th. Uli Steidl cruised and then kicked to his third win on this course with a time of 3:55:36. Brian Morrison (4:12:02) placed 3rd, Hal Koerner (4:13:20) 4th, and Justin Angle 5th (4:14:37). On the women's side, Alyson Littman (4:59:10) Alison Hanks (5:09:05) and Kendra Borgman (5:14:41) swept places 2 through 4. The next day, ageless Henry Wigglesworth placed 2nd overall and 1st among masters runners at the Big Climb for Leukemia. This unique event involves scaling 69 flights of stairs (1,311 steps) at the Columbia Center building in downtown Seattle, which Henry did in a time of 8:06.

On March 11th, Phil Kochik won the prestigious Way Too Cool 50K (location: Cool, California) in muddy conditions with an official time of 3:37:55. On the 12th, several SRC club members were at the front of the "Green Wave" in the St. Patrick's Day Dash, Seattle's largest road race. Top women included Gwen Greiner (2nd, 18:02) and Alysun Deckert (4th, 18:44); top men included Uli Steidl (2nd, 15:34), Chris Charles (4th, 15:41), Ryan Gallagher (14th, 16:33), and Ben Sauvage (26th, 17:12). Times are not particularly meaningful because the exact race distance, while somewhat over 5K, is a closely guarded secret.

Chris Charles and Gwen Greiner raced the 5K indoors at the UW Last Chance Qualifier meet on March 4th. Gwen placed 2nd in 17:16.88, while Chris was 5th in 14:32.30.

Several SRC club members competed at the Fort Steilacoom Resolution Series 15-Miler on February 25th. Chris Charles placed 2nd overall with a time of 1:21:27, while Dan Salazar (1:29:15) was the top masters runner and Andy Lyle (1:36:17) was 1st among 50-and-over runners. Among the women, Mary Hanna's 1:38:31 was good for 3rd overall and 1st for masters, while Trish Steidl (5th, 1:39:13) continued her successful return from last fall's stress fracture. Also on the 25th, Greg Crowther won the Houston Ultra Event Weekend 100K in 6:59:40. This time was a personal best by 21 minutes and, according to Tom Cotner of PNTF, a new Washington state record for 100K. It also makes Crowther only the third American in the last five years to break the 7-hour barrier. (Click here for photos of his race.)

Multiple club members participated in the Freescale Austin Marathon on February 19th. Despite chilly weather, Uli Steidl clocked his 2nd-fastest time ever, 2:16:02, which placed him 10th. Uli was also featured in a pre-race article in the Austin American-Statesman. Scott Jurek took 55th in a personal best time of 2:38:25 and Jeff Phillips was 118th in 2:53:48.

On February 11th, Gwen Greiner raced 3000 meters in 9:50.54 at the Husky Classic indoor track meet. She was 2nd in her heat and 16th overall. The next day, Gwen won the Love 'Em or Leave 'Em Valentine's Day 5K with a time of 17:26. She also teamed with masters champ Henry Wigglesworth (16:58) to win the coed masters team (combined age of 80+) division. Mark Davies was the overall male winner in 16:05, and Liz Stahl (19:25) placed 7th and joined with Club Northwest's Sally Bergesen to win the women's open team division.

SRC members took three of four possible overall victories at the Fort Steilacoom Running Club Resolution Series 10K and 10-Miler on January 28th. In windy and rainy weather, Greg Crowther won the men's 10K in 31:57. Uli Steidl set an even faster pace in the men's 10-miler, winning in 50:42, while Dan Salazar (59:17) was 4th overall and 1st among masters. And Liz Stahl's 1:04:25 was tops in the women's 10-miler, with Mary Hanna (4th, 1st master, 1:04:51) and Trish Steidl (6th, 1:05:58) also placing. Also that day, Gwen Greiner was 4th in the women's 5K at the UW Indoor Invitational with a time of 17:19.86.

On January 18th, Ultrarunning magazine announced its 2005 North American ultrarunners of the year. For the third year in a row, SRC club member Scott Jurek was selected as the men's winner. Incredibly, three other SRC club members were also among the top ten male vote-getters: Phil Kochik (6th), Uli Steidl (9th), and Hal Koerner (10th). In the voting for Men's Performance of the Year, Jurek's 24:36:08 win at the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon was 2nd, while Steidl's 3:07:47 victory at the Sunmart 50K was 4th.

Lots of SRC members saw racing action during the weekend of January 14-15. Chris Charles dominated the Maui Surf and Sand Half Marathon with a course record of 1:09:06. A couple of islands over, Jim Kerby placed 2nd at the HURT 100 with a time of 26:38, one of the fastest times ever on that rugged course. Glen Weissman's 2:36:59 at the Rock 'n Roll Arizona Marathon netted him 17th place (2nd in the 35-39 age group). At race #3 of the Super Jock 'n Jill Winter Grand Prix Series, a cross-country 3K, Emily Showman (11:23) was 2nd. At the Nookachamps Winter Runs, Alex Crabill and Drew Wartenburg went 1-2 in the 10K with times of 33:40 and 33:41, while Scott Jurek (1:16:39) was 3rd in the half marathon. At the Bridle Trails 50K, Alison Hanks (4:46:06) earned top honors among women. Finally, certain rather ambitious club members completed two of these races in the same day! Phil Kochik was 3rd at the Super Jock 'n Jill 3K (9:59) and 1st at Bridle Trails (3:50:58); Mary Hanna was 1st at the Nookachamps 10K (39:31) and 4th at Bridle Trails (5:27:45); and Van Phan was 10th at the Nookachamps half marathon (1:34:46) and 5th at Bridle Trails (5:43:05).

The second race of the 2005-06 Super Jock 'n Jill Winter Grand Prix Series was a 2-mile road race at Magnuson Park on January 7th. In the women's race, Gwen Greiner (10:53) won, Emily Showman (11:26) was 3rd, and Liz Stahl (11:53) was 7th. Greg Crowther, foolishly following the course route published on the web, led the top three men through a "shortcut" that shaved about 15 seconds off their times; Crowther (9:16) was heckled extensively after the race but was not disqualified. His 1st-place finish was backed up by Phil Kochik's 5th-place 9:56 and David White-Espin's 10:41 (4th among masters).

The Fort Steilacoom Running Club's perennial Resolution Series began with 5K and 5-mile races on January 1, 2006. Dan Salazar (28:01) and Mary Hanna (31:38) were first both among masters and overall in the 5-miler. Liz Stahl (31:58) took 3rd, while Trish Steidl (32:46), returning from a stress fracture injury, was 4th in 32:46. Meanwhile, at Club Northwest's Resolution Run 5K that same day, Henry Wigglesworth (17:05) was the top master and ultramarathoner Scott Jurek (17:37) placed 9th.
