2005 year-end rankings courtesy of Tom Cotner: Uli Steidl had the fastest marathon and half-marathon times in the state of Washington, and was also the fastest German over the marathon distance! Chris Charles had the #3 marathon and #3 half-marathon times in the state, and his marathon mark was 77th-best in the US for 2005. Ryan Gallagher's marathon time ranked 4th in Washington and 123rd in the US. Trish Steidl ranked 2nd in Washington (90th in the US) in the marathon and 5th in the half-marathon. Gwen Greiner finished the year at #2 in the half-marathon, and Erika Daligcon was #6 in the half-marathon.

The 2005-06 Super Jock 'n Jill Winter Grand Prix Series kicked off with a 3K cross-country race at Lower Woodland Park on December 17th. Greg Crowther held off a fast-closing high school student for a 9:38 victory; also placing were Brian Morrison (13th, 10:28), Liz Stahl (12th, 12:21), and Alison Hanks (15th, 12:30). Then on December 18th, Bobby Palmquist (43:50) and Bjorn Begelman (44:50) placed 3rd and 6th, respectively, at the 12K's of Christmas.

The SRC achieved an unusual and impressive sweep at the December 10th Sunmart Texas Trail Endurance Runs. In the 50K, the indefatigable Uli Steidl clocked a winning time of 3:07:47, breaking his own course record (from last year) by 4 minutes. In the 50-miler, Phil Kochik triumphed in 5:46:57, a time that puts him in contention for a spot on the 2006 US 100K World Cup team. Hal Koerner was 2nd in 6:11:53.

The November 27th Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon again attracted the participation of many club members. In the marathon, Uli Steidl established himself as the Lance Armstrong of the event by posting his 7th consecutive victory, running even splits en route to a final time of 2:24:24. Van Phan was the 16th woman across the line, running 3:26:01. Female half-marathon finishers included Erika Daligcon (2nd, 1:22:16), Emily Showman (6th, 1:26:17), Mary Hanna (8th [3rd master], 1:27:13), Erin Moore (17th, 1:31:30), and Alison Hanks (25th, 1:33:42). Male half-marathon finishers included Glen Weissman (2nd, 1:13:01), Bobby Palmquist (12th, 1:17:15), and Bjorn Begelman (14th, 1:18:04).

Many of the SRC's top runners spent November 19th at the USATF national club cross country championships in Rochester, New York. (For team photos from this race, please see our cross-country page.) The open men's team was 12th out of 37 complete teams, a dramatic improvement on last year's 30th-place showing. They were led by the 39th-place finish of Chris Charles, who clocked 31:17 on the gently rolling 10K course. Also among the 309 finishers were Greg Crowther (83rd, 32:14), Ben Haber (111th, 32:42), Ryan Gallagher (124th, 32:49), Ben Sauvage (172nd, 33:33), Glen Weissman (190th, 33:49), and Mark Davies (214th, 34:29). The open women were 12th out of 20 complete teams, with Gwen Greiner's 21:49 for 6K earning her 39th place among the 203 finishers. Gwen was backed up by Meg Busse (64th, 22:14), Jen Tonkin (92nd, 22:38), Erika Daligcon (94th, 22:41), Mary Hanna (129th, 23:25), and Liz Stahl (178th, 24:56). Competing in the men's masters 10K were David White-Espin (36:14, 46th in the 40-44 age group) and Scott McCoubrey (37:04, 56th in 40-44). Finally, it should be noted that, if Hanna hadn't been needed by the open women's team and instead had run her time of 23:25 in the masters women's race, she would have placed 4th among 40- to 44-year-olds.

On November 13th, Henry Wigglesworth won the masters division of the 103-floor Sears Tower Stair Climb in Chicago. Henry's time was 14:51.

Store employees Brian Morrison and Hal Koerner went the proverbial extra mile at the April 9th Diez Vista 50K in British Columbia. Actually, it may have been closer to two extra miles, as the frontrunning duo veered off course at an unmarked trail junction, losing about 15 minutes and falling behind three other runners. Morrison and Koerner recovered to finish 1st and 2nd in 4:41 and 4:42, respectively, though Scott Jurek's course record of 4:25 is safe for another year....

On April 2nd, masters runner Mary Hanna was the first female finisher of the Yakima River Canyon Marathon! Mary's time of 3:05:50 was the second-fastest in the history of the event.

Brooks Seattle Running Team member Greg Crowther has been named to the USA 100K World Cup team that will compete in Lake Saroma, Japan on June 26th. (Click here to read the complete USATF press release.) Crowther was selected on the strength of his performance at the Silver Comet 100K in February. This is the second straight year that SRC has sent someone to the World Cup; SRC owner Scott McCoubrey was the manager of last year's men's team. This year's team also includes Nikki Kimball of Montana, known to Pacific Northwest ultra fans as the winner of the White River 50 Miler in 2003 and 2004. Coincidentally, Kimball and Crowther both grew up in south-central Vermont and attended Williams College together in the early to mid '90s.

At March 20th Mercer Island Half Marathon, Chris Charles was the top local finisher; his time of 1:10:57 put him behind only a speedy fellow from Indiana. Sarah Gist (1:29:47) placed 4th among the women, and Meg Busse was 2nd in the concurrently contested 8K race with a time of 31:56.

Masters and soon-to-be-masters took control of the March 19th Fort Steilacoom Resolution Series 20K and 20 Miler. In the 20K, the SRC's Dan Salazar (39) edged John O'Hearn (43) for a 6-second victory, 1:11:47 to 1:11:53. In the 20 miler, the SRC's Mary Hanna (43) trailed only Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier Karen Steen (40), placing 2nd overall with a time of 2:17:33.

Hanna's time was 1:39:58, good for 2nd place overall and 1st among masters. Alyson Littman, despite focusing on keeping her heart rate low, placed 6th in 1:47:59.

Then on the 13th, Ryan Gallagher clocked an 8:49.93 to grab 10th place in the 3000-meter run at the UW Open #3 indoor track meet. Also on the 13th, Gwen Greiner and Ben Haber placed 7th and 8th, respectively, in the Vancouver First Half Marathon. Despite fierce winds, Gwen ran 1:20:10 and Ben clocked 1:12:13.

Several club members competed at the January 29th Fort Steilacoom Resolution Series 10K and 10-miler. Gwen Greiner was the top female finisher in the 10-mile event, with a time of exactly one hour (the 17th fastest 10-mile time in Washington state history, according to Tom Cotner of PNTF); she was backed up by Mary Hanna (4th [2nd master], 1:06:29), Alyson Littman (6th, 1:07:07), and Sarah Gist (7th, 1:07:40). In the men's 10-miler, Chris Charles (53:34), Ben Haber (54:55), and Mark Davies (55:16) captured places 4 through 6. In the 10K, Dan Salazar (35:46) placed 3rd. Also on the 29th, Trish Rosenberg ran 10:20 to place 20th in a highly competitive 3000-meter field at the UW Invitational, an indoor track meet.

Alysun Deckert notched her second victory of the 2004-05 cross country season with a win in the 6K event at the Seattle Open Cross Country Classic on January 23rd. Deckert's time was 22:53.

Congratulations to Brandon Sybrowsky for winning the grueling HURT 100K in Hawaii on January 15th. Brandon devoted 15 hours and 43 minutes of his Hawaiian "vacation" to the 100K.

Greg Crowther, fresh off of his Bridle Trails victory, was featured in the "A Brief Chat With..." section of the January 11th edition of Runner's World Online. Click here to read Greg's interview. Greg is the third current Seattle Running Club member with whom Runner's World has had a "Brief Chat"; previous chats were conducted with Jennifer Tonkin in 2000, Uli Steidl in 2000, and Jennifer Tonkin in 2002.

Several club members placed highly at the Bridle Trails Winter Running Festival on January 9th. In the 50K pairs relay, Uli Steidl and Trish Rosenberg cruised to a 3:19:54 victory. In the 50K solo event, Dan Salazar led the first three laps before giving way to Greg Crowther, Brian Morrison, and Jim Kerby, who swept the top three places with respective times of 3:40:24, 3:41:07, and 3:46:06. Both Crowther and Morrison eclipsed the previous course record of 3:44:28 set by William Emerson last year.

Club members Dan Salazar and Erika Daligcon wasted no time in making their 2005 racing debuts. On January 1, Salazar won the Resolution Run Series 5K in 16:46, while Daligcon was 2nd at the Club Northwest Resolution Run 5K with a time of 18:24. Daligcon's time was helped by the fact that she elected not to undergo the optional "Trip 'n Dip" submersion in Lake Washington.
